The Importance of Mountains

The Mount of Olives
The Mount of Olives

Yesterday, my wife Karen and I had to run in to Salem for a couple of errands. We thought that while we were there we would get some dinner at Chick-fil-A. As we were driving out of the parking lot after dinner, Karen pointed out a particular hilltop across the valley. "That's Snow Peak. You can tell by the little saddle it kind of makes," she said, "It helps me locate where my school is from wherever we are." She went on to talk about how she thinks of this in light of the Bible. We might recognize something by reading a particular passage one time, but we often only notice its importance as we pay closer attention to it. It helps us to identify where we are and where we need to go to get home.

Psalm 121, a song of ascents, says this, "I will lift my eyes up to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will protect you from all evil.; He will keep your soul. The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever." Scripture is the very inspired, inerrant, and sufficient Word of God. In the pages of Scripture, we find everything we need to know to be equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

As we pay closer attention to what the Holy Spirit moved these men to write, we gain greater understanding of where we are and where we need to go to get to our heavenly home. Scripture is significant for us because, like the mountains, it points us to the Lord who is our Helper, our Keeper, and the one who will lead us home.
